Certificate 12A.  Running time: 1hr 52 mins.  Thriller. Doors open at 1.30pm

Tickets: £7.00 (plus booking fee)

THE COURIER is a true-life spy thriller, the story of an unassuming British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history.

At the behest of the UK’s MI-6 and a CIA operative (Rachel Brosnahan), he forms a covert, dangerous partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Reviews:

Cumberbatch, emaciated and shaven-headed, exposes the slightly alien being he always contains and the film gears up considerably in emotional impact. This is Cumberbatch’s best espionage film, then, after Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

The Courier effectively holds attention, proceeding carefully with sometimes obvious moves. But, it also delivers valuable supporting material to the more widely known Cuban Missile Crisis.

This CIA/MI6-run British courier who ferried Soviet nuclear secrets is responsible for the hotline that now connects the White House and the Kremlin so nuclear brinkmanship such as the Cuban missile crisis can never happen again. Good history lesson.

Based on a real-life story, it’s one of the most compelling Cold War thrillers of recent years.

Latest Covid guidance

tgs audience heads distance icon 2

While we are grateful that we can begin to operate in a more normal way, we are mindful that throughout the pandemic we have said that we will always put the wellbeing of our community first. We will continue to do so and we have decided, therefore, that for the time being we should keep some distancing practices in place.

In line with Government regulations introduced on the 10th December 2021 we ask that you continue to wear a face covering (unless exempt) when visiting the Goods Shed – this can be removed for the purposes of eating and drinking only – and to be conscious of social distancing in general. This will be harder for us financially but we think it is the right thing to do. We are open (performances, café and for other groups) as we have been whenever possible in this challenging period. We hope you understand, and that we can relax more fully in a couple of months.

Your support of us throughout this period has been humbling and we will do all we can to make your visits to the Goods Shed and café both comfortable and exciting.
