The idea for this event came out of two concerts in Amsterdam to celebrate Jan Vriend’s 80th birthday and will feature the following works:
- Poulenc – sonata for flute and piano
- Gershwin – Rhapsody in Blue for piano solo
- Vriend – sonata for piccolo and piano
- Debussy – a newly discovered étude and Syrinx for solo piano and solo flute respectively.
The Poulenc sonata is a much loved piece which Ralph and Ilonka have played together before. The Jan Vriend sonata is a piece he wrote at Ilonka’s request for the Dutch Piccolo Project and was written with Ralph and Ilonka in mind. The Gershwin has been a very popular part of a number of concerts Ralph has given over the years – and at recent concert in the Carnegie Hall in New York he premiered a new etude by Debussy that he had recently discovered. Another famous piece Debussy wrote for flute solo, called Syrinx, complements the programme.
All in all it should be a fascinating evening’s music.
Jan Vriend started to play the piano under his father’s guidance at the age of five, soon followed by the clarinet, the violin and the organ. He went on to study percussion and conducting and then mathematics and related sciences, primarily in view of their application in musical composition. During his career he has composed for, conducted and played in many venues and with various ensembles, choirs and orchestras. Core composers in his piano repertoire Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin and Debussy. He only occasionally gives public performances nowadays. website: https://www.janvriend.co.uk
