A closer look with Fiona James at spaces with meanings. Increasingly in the 19th and 20th centuries artists painted interior rooms as a way of exploring relationships with the external world as well as a means to explore private thoughts, feelings and pleasures.
Drawing inspiration from Eastern print culture, notably Japanese woodblock prints, Rod Nelson has developed a style that is recognizably his own. In his own words, it is ‘rooted in an appreciation of flowing lines, and the energy that seems to arise from the discipline necessary to portray flow’.
Two long term friends and painters with a shared love and appreciation of the wonders and the beauty of the garden and its natural forms present different styles and depictions of similar interests in glowing colours and light filled paintings.
