Young Oliver (Mark Lester) is an orphan who escapes the cheerless life of the workhouse and takes to the streets of 19th-Century London. He’s immediately taken in by a band of street urchins, headed by the lovable villain, Fagin, his fiendish henchman, Bill Sikes, and his loyal apprentice, The Artful Dodger. Through his education in the fine points of pickpocketing, Oliver makes away with an unexpected treasure… a home and a family of his own.

This is the 1968 British period musical drama film based on Lionel Bart’s 1960 stage musical of the same name, itself an adaptation of Charles Dickens’s 1838 novel Oliver Twist.

Directed by Carol Reed, the picture includes such musical numbers as “Food, Glorious Food”, “Consider Yourself”, “As Long as He Needs Me”, “You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two”, and “Where Is Love?”.

The film leads us on a journey in search of love, belonging and honour among thieves. Winner of six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Score, Oliver! will steal your heart!

Starring: Ron Moody, Oliver Reed, Harry Secombe, Shani Wallis, Jack Wild, and Mark Lester in the title role.

We are showing this film as part of Tetbury’s Christmas Lights Switch On.

Mark Lester (Oliver) will be turning on the lights at the Market Place in the centre of Tetbury at 6pm
