With dreams of opening a shop in a city renowned for its chocolate, a young and poor Willy Wonka discovers that the industry is run by a cartel of greedy chocolatiers.

Wonka is a 2023 musical fantasy film directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby.  It tells the origin story of Willy Wonka, a character in the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, featuring his early days as a chocolatier. The film stars Timothée Chalamet as the title character with an ensemble cast which includes Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Rich Fulcher, Rakhee Thakrar, Natasha Rothwell, Tom Davis, Olivia Colman and Hugh Grant.

It is the third live-action film based on Dahl’s novel, following Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).

Reviews

Wonka is a sweet and satisfying film that celebrates the magic and joy of chocolate and imagination. It is a film that honours the legacy of Roald Dahl and Willy Wonka, but also adds its own flavour and flair. It is a film that appeals to fans of the original book and films, but also to new and younger audiences. It is a film that delivers on its promise of fun, fantasy, and chocolate.

I thought it was magical! The kids loved it. I could watch it again and again!

I really enjoyed this movie. I wasn’t expecting it to be good because I couldn’t see Timothée Chalamet as WONKA but he did well and this adaptation was fun to watch. It had many funny moments and the ending was so sweet.
