Captain Swing are a five piece English Ceilidh Band playing exciting music for dynamic dances.
Formed in 1988 Captain Swing are Mike Griffith (caller), Andy Casserley (melodeon, concertina, recorder & clarinet), Liz Griffiths (recorder, concertina, saxophone & percussion), John Davis (bass guitar & recorder) and Ian Pittaway (guitar & mandolin).
A “Ceilidh” (Gaelic, pronounced “kay- lee”) is a social gathering. Nowadays the word has become synonymous with a barn dance, which is another name for country dancing.
There are English, Irish and Scottish varieties of ceilidh and Captain Swing are English dance specialists. The band play the tunes – usually traditional, some composed by the band – and the caller guides you through the dances.
The dances are fun (that’s the point) and can be enjoyed by anyone of any age or ability. They are ideal for all kinds of social events. No experience is necessary as the caller will explain everything you need to know!
An entertaining time for all is guaranteed.
“We danced and danced and danced as the band and caller amply filled the brief providing excellent danceable sets. The crowd danced on and on. A true celebration”
