Gareth Lockrane with the Tom Ball Trio

Gareth Lockrane is one of a kind – a human dynamo of improvisation and composition, arguably the UK’s pre-eminent jazz flautist, ranging in flutes from bass to piccolo. He’s playing a mini tour of the South West with the Tom Ball trio and we are delighted to book them for their last gig on the tour.

It is difficult to put into words just how good a performer Gareth Lockrane is, but we can assure you – he is special, and you wont want to miss out

The trio of Tom Ball (piano and organ), Kevin Sanders (bass) and Gary Evans (drums) are one of the most in-demand rhythm sections in the South West and two of their number have played to sold out shows at Tetbury with the Neil Maya quartet.

After an inaugural gig with them at the Liquid Spirit club in Torquay last year, Gareth asked to tour with them again and they will have their work cut out keeping pace with this London legend!

Band Line up:

Gareth Lockrane – Flute

Tom Ball  – Piano

Kevin Sanders – Bass

Gary Evans  – Drums

First coming to prominence in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra in the 1990s, Gareth graduated from the Royal Academy of Music, where he is now on the teaching staff. He is an extremely busy session player on anything from hip hop tracks to festival stages, and last year featured in both the Aretha Franklin prom and a special Quincy Jones concert, of course playing the iconic Soul Bossa Nova piccolo riff for the great man. Gareth has played with anyone you care to name in the British jazz scene, including Tommy Smith, Laurence Cottle, Gwilym Simcock, Reuben James, Natalie Williams, as well as jazz funk icons Incognito and the James Taylor Quartet, to name a small proportion.

Gareth L oneBut he really comes into his own when leading his own groups – whether it is a quartet, his organ-based quintet Grooveyard, or his eponymous big band. Grooveyard’s first album “Put the Cat out” won them best European jazz group in 2003 and their second album “The Strut” won Mojo magazine’s album of the year in 2012. In 2009 Gareth’s septet album “No Messin'” won best album in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards. A prolific composer, Gareth’s albums all feature original compositions with a combination of groove and sophistication that is ahead of its time.

Among musicians Gareth has a fearsome reputation as the most practised yet inventive improviser, always relentlessly pursuing new heights of virtuosity while keeping uppermost his sense of fun, with subtle quotes from the thousands of tunes in his head. His ability to take a three or four note motif, toy with it, turn it on its head and make it into an epic 5 minute solo, has to be seen to be believed. Despite regularly “roasting” other players he is an incredibly down-to-earth chap with a patience brought from years of hosting “Junior Academy” with London’s budding teenage players.

It is difficult to put into words just how good a performer Gareth Lockrane is, but you probably get the picture – he is special, and it will be well worth coming out.
