The Good Liar is a 2019 American crime thriller film directed and produced by Bill Condon and written by Jeffrey Hatcher, based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Searle.

Career con artist Roy Courtnay can hardly believe his luck when he meets well-to-do widow Betty McLeish online. As Betty opens her home and life to him, Roy is surprised to find himself caring about her, turning what should be a cut-and-dry swindle into the most treacherous tightrope walk of his life.

Starring Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren with Jim Carter, Russell Tovey and Mark Lewis Jones. Vanity Fair said of the film:

“The pleasure of The Good Liar, and it’s a major one, is the chance to watch Mirren and McKellen act together in a cat-and-mouse duet that turns into an elegant waltz of affection and deception. His Roy is like the talented Mr. Ripley as a cutthroat octogenarian — a man who has buried all feeling, but it comes gushing up anyway. And she plays Betty as a woman who’s all heart-on-the-sleeve trust, which turns out to be her own devious form of leverage”.
