Robert Tressell: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist One Man Show

Robert Tressell – The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (Townsend Productions)
Neil Gore’s outstanding one-man adaptation of Tressell’s classic novel is a theatrical tour de force – more relevant today than ever.
Using a magic lantern, projected animation, political conjuring tricks, live music and song (and with the Great Money Trick as its centrepiece), we follow the painters and decorators who struggle to maintain themselves and their families through hard work, poverty, and the constant fear of unemployment, whilst renovating a large town-house for the local mayor, Mayor Sweater.
The production brings out both the humour and humanity of the book, while retaining it’s scathing analysis of class relations, poverty and the themes of insecure employment and the demonisation of poverty.
