Scarlett and Sophie Rickard: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

Tickets: £7.50 (plus booking fee)

Scarlett and Sophie Rickard – The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

The Rickard Sisters begin our evening celebrating the work of Robert Tressell, the impoverished painter and decorator who wrote one of the world’s great political classics. Published posthumously in 1914, the book has been celebrated – and feared – ever since. The philanthropists of the title are the workers who willingly give their labour only to enrich their employers. The hero Owen tries to enlighten his friends, who refuse to recognise their oppression.

Sophie and Scarlett set out to make the novel more accessible, using their passion for graphic novels, and their sensitive and faithful adaptation has been widely acclaimed. Scarlett’s warm and rewarding illustrations, and Sophie’s light touch with the text bring this story to life, while retaining the power and anger with which it was written.

The sisters will introduce their work, talk through their approach, and discuss why they felt it was so important to bring the book to a wider audience today.
