Concrete Fever Dream is a presentation of large-scale graphic prints produced by Will Hurt. This series showcases images developed using the artist’s proprietary software Mass- initially a half-day project to codify Daniel Libeskind’s Micromegas drawings, over the last year, Hurt has developed Mass to create drawings and animations so saturated with complex geometry that they are only possible due to recent developments in computer hardware.

The title Concrete Fever Dream is drawn from the artist’s interest in Modernist architecture; making reference to Modernism’s use of concrete as a construction material he invites the work to be read as half remembered images from the fever dreams of yesteryear’s architects.

Intimate digital prints punctuate these large-scale images providing both a welcome respite and serving as a key through which to examine the work, physically drawing an audience closer to the prints which then fill one’s entire view, much like the perspective afforded by dreams.

Since graduating from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2009, Hurt has exhibited nationally and internationally; given talks at Tate, QUAD and Queen Mary University; been commissioned by Nottingham Contemporary, Edinburgh International Science Festival and Derby Silk Mill; been a resident on the British Council’s DigiPoems programme in Harare, Zimbabwe and the British Council’s ColabNowNow programme in Maputo, Mozambique to which he will be returning this year as a facilitator. Hurt was a finalist for the Lumen Prize in 2017 and a judge for the Prize in 2019, received a Shine Emerging Artist Award in 2017.

Will Hurt will be at Tetbury Goods Shed on 21st August to run an all day drop-in colouring-in workshop. A limited edition 16-page A4 booklet designed especially for Concrete Fever Dream featuring images made using Mass (and unavailable elsewhere) will be available to buy at a reduced rate of just £3.00 (usually £5.00) and pencils will be provided. Colouring in books have seen a resurgence in recent years fuelled by the recent commercialisation of Mindfulness, the booklets offer a tongue-in-cheek reference to this, inviting visitors to become frustrated colouring in images featuring thousands of tiny pieces of complex geometry.

On the day visitors will also be able to create drawings using an iPad version of Mass which can then be emailed to the creator as a keepsake.
